The Global Alliance, through the University of Washington, received a $175,000 grant beginning January 2001 from the Engineering Information Foundation. The grant was awarded for a proposal to conduct a pilot study to promote the participation of women students and professionals in science and engineering in Egypt, Mali, and Nigeria. The project will begin in these three countries and expand to other African nations. The proposal is a collaborative partnership between the University of Washington and AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science)

African partners are:

  • Professor Azza Elleboudy, Immediate Past Chairperson of Civil Engineering, Zagazig University, Banha Branch, Egypt,

  •
  • Mme. Gakou Salamata Fofana, President, Female Engineers of Mali, and

  •
  • Mrs. Ola Sulyman, Immediate Past President, Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN).
The proposal entails a two-year project to build on the Global Alliance's existing networks and comprehensive web site by establishing collaborations with top engineering universities and professional associations in Africa and to increase awareness and participation of women in SMET (Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology).

This special section on African Women in Engineering and Science presents the challenges and opportunities presented to Egyptian, Malian, and Nigerian women engineers and scientists.
