Mona Dahms

Mona Dahms is an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark. She holds a M.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark, as well as university credits in International Studies. Presently, she is pursuing a Masters Degree in Adult Education Studies at Open University, Roskilde University Centre, Denmark. She is a founding member of the board of a mentor project for female engineering students at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Aalborg University. She is a member and immediate Past-Chair of the Women's Committee under the Society of Danish Engineers. The Women's Committee is active in recruitment, retention, employment and visibility of female engineers.

In terms of international engagement she is a longstanding member and a board member of the international Gender And Science And Technology (GASAT) Association and is the future convenor of the 10th International GASAT Conference, to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark in July 2001. She has participated in and contributed to 5 of the previous International GASAT conferences. She is also an external gender consultant to the Technical College of Aarhus where she teaches on issues of Gender and Development to trainees from Africa and Asia.

In the past Mrs. Dahms has chaired the Women's Committee under the Cooperative Council for Engineering Education in Denmark, a committee dealing with the issues of recruiting and retaining female students to engineering education. Mrs. Dahms has also been a gender consultant to Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) on projects on gender and economic infrastructure development, in Tanzania as well as in Denmark. She has spend a total of 7 years working in Tanzania, partly as an engineerin acher with Dar es Salaam Technical College, partly as a Training Expert to the then Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (TP&TC) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. During her last period in Tanzania, from 1988 to 1992, she was a m   the Women's Study Group of Institute of Development Studies, University of Dar es Salaam.

The recent research of Mrs. Dahms focuses on the role of information- and communication-technology in human, social and economic development in Africa. More specifically she is evaluating the impact of multipurpose community telecentres in Tanzania, including a gender perspective in the research.
