Tamala
Tonga Kambikambi, M. Sc.
Tamala is an agronomist, currently lecturing at the
University of Zambia where she also obtained her M.
Sc. in 1996. This was after working as an extension
staff with a private company for seven years after her
first degree. Tamala holds several other portfolios
besides her lecturing job. She is the current Assistant
Dean in charge of undergraduate studies in the School
of Agricultural Sciences. She is an active member of
the Agricultural Sciences Association of Zambia (ASAZ),
has previously served as a member of the Executive,
and is Full member of the Third World Organization for
Women in Science (TWOWS). Tamala is the current Executive
Secretary of the Zambia Association for Women in Science
and Technology (ZAWIST), of which she was the founding
secretary in the interim committee and then given the
mandate to continue after the first Annual General Meeting
in 1999. Tamala is also a Fellow of LEAD (Leadership
for Environment and Development) International. LEAD
International is a non-governmental, non-profit organization
that aims to sensitize middle management personnel from
varied disciplines in the areas of environment and sustainable
development. As middle management personnel enter top
management, they will be aware of these issues will
be able to mainstream them into the decision-making.
Her main research areas include sustainable agriculture
and gender issues in science and technology. Ms. Kambikambi
also serves on several local community boards and makes
several invited presentations to both national and international
organizations.
As Secretary of ZAWIST (a purely voluntary position),
Tamala manages the communications of the Association,
is the primary initiator of networks for the Association
and takes a keen interest in role modeling for young
female scientists and potential scientists. The Association
is still in its infancy. However through keen interest
and vigorous networking, the Association has been represented
on both national and international forums. Through these
efforts as well, the Government Ministry in charge of
Science and Technology fully recognizes the Association
and works closely with it in efforts to mainstream gender
in Science and Technology. Because of her intense interest
in Science and Technology, she was one of the female
scientists to be sponsored to take part in the World
Conference on Science held in Budapest, Hungary in mid
1999.
ZAWIST was created to form a forum and network for Zambian
women in Science and Technology and thus promote their
participation in the needs oriented scientific and technological
audit of the nations' sustainable development.
Ms. Kambikambi strongly believes in thinking globally
but acting locally!
