Suzanne G. Brainard, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of the Center for Workforce Development (CWD) at the University of Washington. She is an Affiliate Professor in Technical Communication in the College of Engineering and in the Department of Women Studies in the College of Arts & Sciences. She is one of three co-founders of the Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network (WEPAN), and the immediate Past-President. She is past chair of the congressionally-mandated Committee on Equal Opportunity in Science & Engineering (CEOSE) and served on the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Committee on Diversifying the Engineering Workforce and the AAAS National Mentoring Committee. She is a Fellow of AAAS and is the recipient of the 2001 Maria Mitchell Women in Science Award.

Her primary areas of research include program evaluation, mentoring, diversity and climate studies in engineering and science. More specifically, her research has focused on longitudinal studies examining issues of retention and advancement in engineering and science and the workforce, institutional climate studies at the University of Washington and national climate surveys in engineering and science. In addition, she conducts evaluations of intervention programs focused on increasing the participation, retention and advancement of women and minorities in science and engineering. The National Science Foundation, the Department of Education (FIPSE), the Department of Energy and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have funded her research. Dr. Brainard is co-directs an international initiative with WEPAN, AAAS and AWIS, the Global Alliance in Science & Engineering to Diversify the Workforce.
