Irene Nafuna-Muloni

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (UEDCL)
Irene Nafuna-Muloni is the Managing Director for Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd
(UEDCL) since April 2002. UEDCL is a Government limited liability company created on 1st April
2001 after the unbundling of Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) into three successor companies. It
distributes and sales electricity in Uganda and Rwanda and is currently undergoing privatization.
For 18 years since graduation, Irene has been gainfully employed in Operational, Management and Leadership
responsibilities in utility companies (Power and Telecommunications); and also served on voluntarily basis in
Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations.
From October 2001 to April 2002, she served as Manager, Customer Service (Kampala Area), for UEDCL. Before this,
she worked as Manager, Information Technology with UEB from March 1998 to April 2001, where she was transferred
to UEDCL in the same capacity. During the days of UEB, she served as Senior Protection Engineer for two years,
Senior Communication Engineer, for two years, and Communication Engineer for three years. Before joining UEB,
Irene worked with Uganda Posts and Telecommunications Corporation for five years as an Executive Engineer, after
completing her pupilage.
Irene has held various positions of responsibility both in Government and Non-Governmental Organizations. These
include serving as Board Member for Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda; Kilembe Mines Limited, and Uganda
Polytechnic Kyambogo. On a regional basis, she is the Senior Fellow; Gender Advisory Board (GAB) set up by the
UNCSTD, for the Africa Region, and served as the Vice-Chairperson for the East African Sub-Region of the African
Women Development and Communication Network (FEMNET).
Nationally, she served as the Council Member for the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE); Secretary
General for Women Engineers, Technicians and Scientists in Uganda (WETSU); Member of the Planning Committee
of Uganda Women's Network (UWONET). Member, Projects Committee, for Uganda Women Effort to Save Orphans
(UWESO); Member, Building Committee, for Action For Development (ACFODE); and Member, NGO Monitoring
Committee, National Association of Women Organizations in Uganda (NAWOU). Irene was the third Sarah Ntiro
Award Winner, 2003; recognized as a ‘Model of Excellence’ by the Forum for Africa Women Educationists (FAWE),
Uganda Chapter.
She was born on 18 November 1960 in Budadiri, Sironko District, in Uganda. She graduated from Makerere
University, Kampala, Uganda with an Honors degree in Electrical Engineering in 1986. She has a MBA degree from
Capella University, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. She is married to Mr. Felix Muloni and they have been blessed with
four children, Sheba, Barry, Cynthia, and Druscilla.
