Dr. Suriya is a senior Library and Information Science professional in India and she is a pioneer in
building a digital library in Annamalai University where she is currently working. She received her PhD
degree (India) in 1990 and pursued her post-doctoral research at Warwick University (UK) in 1998. She was a Visiting
Professor to the Institute of Informatics and Gesellschaft (Germany) in 2000 and worked as visiting scholar in the
Faculty of Media Studies at University of Western Ontario (Canada) in 2001, and Department of Gender Studies at
University of Essen (Germany) in 2002. She was invited to deliver guest lectures at the Ball State University (USA) in
1999, Albert Ludwigs University (Germany) in 1999, University of Essen (Germany) in 2002, University of Bonn
(Germany) in 2002, and University of South Australia in 2003. She was a panelist at the Grace Hopper Celebration of
Women in Computing in 2002 (Ottawa) and in 2004 (Chicago) and at the Workshop of African Women in Science and
Engineering (Kenya) in 2004. She was an author of more than 90 research publications on various areas of current
interests such as ‘Gender Development in the IT Sector’, ‘Mapping of Research Performance’ and the ‘Impact of
Technology on Social Development’. She was an organizer of Women in Information Technology (WIT) sequence of
conference from 2002 to 2004. She was a recipient of Commonwealth Scholarship (UK-CSFP) in 1998; Literati Club
1999 Highly Commended Award (UK-MCB University Press); and Women and Development Award (Canada-SICI) in
2001. Presently she is a Director (Interim Board Member) of INWES ( International Network of Women Engineers and
Scientists), President of IAWES (Indian Association of Women Engineers and Scientists and Engineers), and Indian
Ambassador of the Association of Computing Machinery-Women’s Chapter (ACM-W).
