As access to technology and trade offers the potential to remove barriers between nations and to encourage the free flow of information among them, it also offers the promise of enabling more members of society, such as women and minorities, to participate in the global economy.

As over half the population of the world, women have not kept up with the expanding opportunities created by the globalization of the economy. This situation holds for women from all nations, industrialized and developing. In this section, we will explore why women are under-represented in the higher-paying sectors of the economy and what impact international trade has on their plight. Read more about this in Issue of the Week.

Donald I King, AIA
Donald King Architects
Mr. King is President and Principal Architect of his own architectural practice in Seattle. He is a licensed architect in the states of Washington, California and Michigan and has been a member of the American Institute of Architects since 1979. Prior to establishing his own firm, he served on the staff of community design centers in Detroit, Los Angeles and Seattle.

Mr. King founded Donald King Architects (DKA) in 1985. DKA is a fourteen-person firm that specializes in community facility projects. The firm has successfully completed over a hundred projects including transportation centers, schools, libraries, community centers, housing and healthcare facilities. DKA currently provides project management service to the Seattle Public Schools 350 million-dollar school construction program and to the Port of Seattle for the two billion-dollar expansion of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. In 1999, DKA has four medical/dental clinic projects, a 66-unit assisted living facility, a new team store for the National Football League Seattle Seahawks and a light rail transit station project in design.

In 1984, Mr. King designed a temporary hospital tent for refugees in the Sudan fleeing the Ethiopian civil war. Two tents were fabricated in Seattle from surplus yacht sails and Boeing Aircraft aluminum conduit and shipped to the Sudan with Seattle area-donated medical supplies and a team of medical providers. The tent provided shelter for hundreds of refugees in need of medical attention. Donald King has designed a private residence in Lagos in 1978. He continues to work with South African development partners and participates in the capacity building of Black South African architecture and engineering firms.

Donald King seeks opportunities to provide community development planning, architectural design and project management services in Ghana. His specific areas of interest include:

  • New school planning, design and project management

  • New housing design and development

  • New healthcare facility planning, design and development

  • Business and tourist guest house design and development
